The Mayor’s Employment Development Office training program will receive 1,000 laptops and one year of free Internet Essentials service for each participant for the first two years of the program.
BALTIMORE, November 17, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Comcast’s Internet Essentials Program today announced a major workforce development initiative in City of Baltimore including $ 200,000 in grants. In addition, the company has started distributing 3,000 new laptops to several organizations in the city focused on education, workforce development and digital equity, including:
Mayor’s Office for Employment Development
Baltimore County Community College
Baltimore City Community College
Catholic charities of Baltimore
Center for Urban Families
Liberty Village Project
Digital Harbor High School
At November 11, 2021, the Baltimore County Community College (CCBC) was the first partner to announce its $ 30,000 Workforce Development Grant and a laptop donation from Comcast. The grant will help under-resourced students through the college’s Student Emergency Assistance Fund, while the laptops will go to students enrolled in CCBC certificate and adult literacy programs. The CCBC serves 50,000 students, more than half of whom are adult learners in continuing education. The CCBC will also help raise awareness of the Federal Emergency Broadband Benefit to enrolled students, allowing eligible students to enjoy free or heavily discounted Internet service at home.
“With free, low-cost internet available to every Baltimorean, we must collectively focus on broadband adoption by making sure everyone has the skills and tools to connect,” said Michael parker, senior vice president of Comcast’s Beltway region. “Education at all levels is essential, and our workforce development grants and laptop computer donations will help ensure that adults entering the workforce have the tools, skills and knowledge. confidence needed to find a job and be successful. “
Research shows that low-income students and their families face many issues with broadband adoption, including housing insecurity, literacy issues, language barriers, and lack of digital skills training. As a result, Comcast’s digital equity efforts were designed to address as many of these challenges as possible, including providing low-cost high-speed internet in the home; the possibility of purchasing an affordable and heavily subsidized computer; access to free Wi-Fi in community centers across the country; and many options for acquiring the digital skills necessary to browse remotely and use the Internet.
