Infosys founder Narayan Murthy denounced the “tyranny of coaching courses” and said IITs had become a victim of rote learning. Addressing an event to present the Infosys prize on Tuesday, billionaire NR Narayana Murthy spoke out against the state of education in the country. Emphasizing the Socratic method of learning, Murthy said schools and colleges need to reorient their teaching methods.

“The first prong is to reorient our teaching in schools and colleges towards Socratic questioning and connecting what they learn in the classroom to the real world around them rather than taking rote exams. Even our IIT have become victims of this syndrome, thanks to the tyranny of coaching classes,” said Narayana Murthy.

The Infosys founder blamed the tyranny of coaching classes for the introduction of rote learning in IITs. He said India should focus on scientific knowledge. The education system should be both model driven and money driven.

Narayana Murthy, Administrator of the Infosys Science Foundation, emphasized the scientific approach to education and pointed to the inadequate state-of-the-art research infrastructure in higher education institutions. He also added that scientific research is about curiosity, daring, healthy skepticism and challenging the status quo.

The Infosys founder said, “Research thrives in an environment of honor and respect for scholars, meritocracy, and the support and approval they receive from society. Therefore, there is a need to recognize and reward the outstanding research efforts of Indian scholars…Scientific research is about curiosity, daring, healthy skepticism and challenging the status quo.

Narayana Murthy appreciated the launch of the new national education policy and its implementation.
