CHADDS FORD – Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union Foundation announces the awarding of nine mini-grants to teachers in the Philadelphia area. The grant application was open to K-12 teachers to help fund innovative student-focused educational experiences that may otherwise go unfunded. The 2021-2022 Teacher Mini-Grants are made possible by a grant from the Minford Foundation.
Beneficiary Dan Meli of Interboro High School plans to expand his students’ financial and budget literacy by purchasing educational board games that allow students to use the highest form of cognitive understanding in a crucial ability to manage and develop its finances. Students at North Star Elementary in Hockessin, Delaware, will learn about gravity and other STEM topics; Teacher Kristin Becker plans to use the funds to purchase materials to conduct hands-on learning experiences in small groups.
Grants have also been awarded to the following applicants:

Springfield Country Club Hosts Job Fair
Springfield Country Club, 400 W. Sproul Road, Springfield will host a job fair, 3-7 p.m. Thursday, March 3 and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, March 19. Potential employees are sought for front of house to back of house and all levels of management. People must come professionally dressed with valid photo ID and copies of their resume. Representatives from the following locations are hiring: Springfield Country Club, Tavola Restaurant and Bar, Fairfield Inn and Suites, Courtyard by Marriott, Bistro by Courtyard and Potter’s Pub and Grill.

Bingo fans can find local games all around Delco
- The Lioness Clubs Lions of the Township of Aston are hosting an afternoon bingo, 1 p.m., Sunday, March 6, at the Aston Community Center, 3270 Concord Rd., Aston. Doors open at 12 p.m. The cost is $20, with cash prizes and door prizes. Tickets will be available at the door. Refreshments will be available for purchase. All players must be 18 years or older. Aston Lions and Lioness Clubs spent more than $7,000 on holiday meals, a children’s party and disaster relief. Proceeds from this event will help replenish the charity budgets of both clubs. - Parents of Ridley Park Cub Scout Pack 264 will be hosting a Designer Bag Bingo, 7-10 p.m., Saturday, April 2, in the gymnasium at St. James’s School, 500 Tome St., Ridley Park.

Haverford offers matching grants to businesses to beautify facades
Help is available for businesses in Haverford Township looking to refresh the exterior of their building to look nicer or attract more customers. Beginning March 1, the program will provide matching grants to businesses, non-profit organizations or commercial landlords to improve the appearance of buildings visible from the street. The first phase of the program will end on April 29 at 4 p.m. or when ten applications have been received, whichever comes first. Through this program, the township will match the applicant’s investment in qualified dollar-for-dollar improvements, up to $10,000. Commercial property owners and tenants, with landlord approval, are also eligible.
“The Township of Haverford has begun helping businesses respond to the negative economic impacts of the pandemic through our Back to Business grant programs,” explained Township Manager Dave Burman. “The Facade Improvement Program is another way the township is helping our business community through funding from the American Rescue Plan Act.”
Eligible uses include masonry work, cleaning, painting, awnings, signage, lighting, windows and doors, and landscaping, among others.
“Improving the appearance of a commercial property does more than increase its own value. This often changes the equation for others nearby when they decide to invest in their own properties and leads to the revitalization of an entire area,” notes Matching Façade Grant Committee member Don Kelly.
The administrator of the Façade Improvement Matching Grant Program on behalf of the Township of Haverford is the non-profit organization Discover Haverford (formerly known as HPED).
