Student Affairs appoints the Dean of Students; AVP Superviser Career Center, Stamp, Greek Life; and director of student conduct

Vice President of Student Affairs Patty Perillo sent the following message to the campus community today:

I am very pleased to write to you today about our national processes for finding leadership positions within the Division of Student Affairs, including the Assistant Vice President (AVP) for Areas of Engagement and our Senior Vice President. -deputy president and dean of students (AVP / DOS). I would like to thank the members of the AVP and AVP / DOS research committees chaired by Dr Mary Hummel and Dr Warren Kelley respectively. The search committees have done an outstanding job and produced an incredibly strong and diverse pool of finalists. I appreciate all that Mary, Warren, the Research Committees and Earl Cabellon, the Research Firm Liaison, have done to provide us with rich opportunities.

Dr James McShay has accepted the position of Assistant Vice President overseeing the University Career Center, the Adele H. Stamp Student Union, the Department of Fellowship and Sisterhood, and the Senior Director of Diversity, Equity and inclusion. James will also oversee assessment and learning outcomes and IT for the division. I am delighted to welcome James back to Student Affairs and the University of Maryland. He will begin his remote position on October 1, 2021 and will join us on campus on November 1, 2021.

James is joining DSA after his most recent role as Vice Chancellor for Equity and Inclusion at the University of Washington (UW) Tacoma, a post he has held for three years. James joined UW after serving as Associate Director of the Stamp Student Union. James has held a number of academic and administrative positions at Iowa State University, including serving as Director of Undergraduate Education and Program Director for an academic program called Dialogues on Diversity. James received his BA from State University of New York-Oswego, and his MA and PhD from Iowa State University in Education, Programs, and Teaching with a concentration in Multicultural and International Studies. Dr Andrea Goodwin has accepted the inaugural post of Assistant Vice President and Dean of Students. In this role, she will establish a new Dean of Students office located on the second floor of the Mitchell Building. She will chair the Behavioral and Threat Assessment (BETA) team and oversee the directors of the student conduct and parenting and family affairs departments. Given the personal, social, and academic challenges faced by students, as well as increased mental health and crisis needs, the Dean of the Student Office will be committed to serving as mentors and advocates, providing support to students. for them to flourish. The caring team will walk alongside students, educating, equipping and empowering them to thrive, while encouraging them to use academic and community resources. They will also serve as the main intervention team with families and parents. Over the next few months, Andrea will also be joined by an Assistant Dean of Students. Andrea will officially begin this new role on August 30, 2021. She will also continue to oversee the Areas of Engagement until Dr. McShay can begin his work at UMD.

I am grateful for the exemplary service Andrea provided during her 27 years on campus. She has served as Acting Assistant Vice President for the past nine months and Director of Student Conduct for 10 years. Since arriving on campus in 1994, Andrea has also served as Acting Co-Director of the Office of Civil Rights and Sexual Misconduct, Process Consultant for the Center for Leadership and Organizational Change, Rights and Responsibilities Coordinator, and Director in Resident Life. Andrea received the prestigious President’s Distinguished Service Award in 2015. Andrea received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Syracuse University and her doctorate in educational policy, planning and administration from the University of Maryland. With Andrea’s transition to the AVP / DOS position, it became essential to fill the vacant position of Director of Student Conduct before the start of the academic year. James Bond, JD has accepted the permanent position of Director of Student Conduct. James has served successfully as Acting Director of Student Conduct since November 2020. He has extensive driving experience, having served as Deputy Director for the past 10 years and previously Coordinator of the Office of Rights and Responsibilities of the UMD. James received a Juris Doctor (JD) from Georgetown University and his BA from the University of Maryland.

James will continue in his acting role until August 30, 2021, when he will assume the permanent role of Director of Student Conduct. A search will begin shortly for a new assistant director of student conduct. It is essential to fill this position as soon as possible so that the Office of Student Conduct is ready to handle a significant workload expected at the start of the fall semester, as students return to campus. I am delighted that James continues to be a part of the Student Affairs leadership team. Please join me in congratulating James on this rightful appointment!
