The Administrator’s Corner by Sheila Riebe
Since 1972, National School Nurses Day has been dedicated to recognizing school nurses. National School Nurses Day was created to promote a better understanding of the role of school nurses in the school environment. School Nurses Day is celebrated on Wednesday, May 11, 2022.
We are fortunate to have five amazing school nurses in Albert Lea area schools who go above and beyond to advance the well-being, academic achievement and lifelong success of our students. School nurses strongly advocate for ways to improve the overall health of students in schools, while meeting the unique needs of each child. A student’s health is inextricably linked to their ability to learn. If health care needs are not met, it is difficult for children to participate in their learning environment. The school nurse helps children with their physical, psychological, emotional and social health needs as well as with their academic success.
As another unique school year draws to a close, I must send a message of thanks to our school nurses who provide dedicated service to students, families and staff. During a pandemic, our school nurses have been called upon to expand their roles and responsibilities and their endless contributions have not gone unnoticed. They have kept pace with evolving protocols and guidelines to safely care for students and staff. Our nurses have been tasked with assessing students for symptoms and exposure to COVID-19, conducting contact tracing, managing chronic conditions, and educating staff, students, parents, and community partners on the COVID-19 prevention strategies. They had to solve problems where there were no definitive answers, coordinate with school administration, reassure students and staff, and stay calm during this unprecedented time.
I thank our team of graduate school nurses. They are the health heroes of our students, performing miracles big and small every day while adapting to our ever-changing world. Their contributions to the health and safety of our students, families and school communities are incredibly appreciated.
