Beginning in the Fall 2022 semester, prospective students will have the opportunity to pursue a Bachelor of Political Studies degree online through a partnership between the College of Professional Studies and the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairsthe nation’s #1 school for public affairs according to a study by US News & World Report.
“The online political studies program extends the excellence of the Maxwell School to students who otherwise could not attend Syracuse University on campus or full-time,” says Michael Frasciello, dean of the College of Professional Studies. “The cross-curricular program is another wonderful expression of Maxwell’s commitment to making Syracuse University more accessible and truly a welcoming university for all.”
Political studies students will examine the policy-making process while being introduced to the historical, social, economic, and political factors that shape issues at the local, state, national, and global levels. Students will also learn to measure the resulting impact of policies and how they affect individuals and communities. With an in-depth research project involving a government agency or community organization, graduates of the program will have a rich portfolio that showcases their learning.
“Political Studies has been a popular and iconic undergraduate program at the Maxwell School for 45 years,” says Carol Faulkner, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at the Maxwell School. “We are thrilled that this partnership with the College of Professional Studies allows us to reach new audiences of students who want to make an impact in their communities.”
The Professional Baccalaureate (BPS) The Policy Studies program will be an immersive online experience that provides real-world learning opportunities through a mix of asynchronous courses, distance experiential activities, and synchronous courses. Much of the coursework is designed to be completed outside of weekly class meetings. Weekly 90-minute classes provide students with the time and space to engage in active discussions, receive immediate feedback, and connect with other classmates and instructors.
The structure of a BPS degree allows part-time online learners with busy schedules to focus on job skills and practical skills. With a BPS in Political Studies, graduates will be highly competitive in the job market and when seeking admission to a wide variety of graduate programs.
“A BPS degree is focused on professional skills and career preparation,” says Ryan O. Williams, associate dean of the College of Professional Studies. “The combination of coursework and seminars designed to enhance career readiness sets a BPS apart from other bachelor’s degrees. We are delighted to be able to offer a policy-focused degree in partnership with the Maxwell School.
